The Super Robot Wars franchise has been around for over 30 years in Japan, with more than 50 entries released. However, only about seven of these titles have officially reached our region. Now, the latest entry, Super Robot Wars Y, is available on most platforms, delivering one of the most iconic anime crossovers of mecha and characters to battle against the forces of evil.
This series is known for merging universes from different anime to create a unique narrative. While it doesn’t always make perfect sense, it manages to give the impression that all these worlds coexist. Among the roster we can find characters from Gundam, The Big O, Code Geass, Macross, Mazinkaiser, Getter Robo, Dynazenon, and many more—some of which are quite well-known in the West.
The story is completely original this time around, letting players choose between two protagonists: Cross or Forte, both piloting ninja-themed mechs. Their mission is to defend a city transformed into a massive spaceship called A. Advent. The enemies include villains from the featured anime, as well as kaiju inspired by franchises like Godzilla.
Visually, the game adopts a comic book or manga-like style, with battles presented in panel-based animations. This results in repetitive attack sequences, which can make the combat feel monotonous. On top of that, the game only features Japanese voice acting, though the dialogue is fully translated into English—meaning there’s plenty of reading involved.
Gameplay revolves around tactical RPG mechanics with turn-based battles. You’ll command your troops, decide which enemies to face in one-on-one duels, and choose between attacking, defending, or unleashing special moves. Players will also need to manage leveling up, upgrading abilities, and swapping attacks. While it’s exciting to see beloved heroes clash, the repetitive combat makes the overall experience somewhat tedious and less engaging over long sessions.
Fortunately, Super Robot Wars Y offers multiple difficulty levels and even an auto-pilot mode, allowing players to focus on the story without slogging through the more monotonous mechanics. In this way, the game can be enjoyed either actively or passively, almost like an interactive anime series.
In conclusion, Super Robot Wars Y is a solid tactical RPG that works best as fanservice for mecha enthusiasts. Its narrative leans more toward tribute than innovation, but it remains an enjoyable experience for anyone who loves watching legendary robots collide in epic battles.
