Redhill Games unable to escape the grasp of gaming industry hardships

Redhill Games has announced that it will begin a restructuring program “in the near future,” a move that will affect several of its employees and reshape the studio’s role in the industry.

Founded in 2018 by industry veterans including Matias Myllyrinne (former CEO of Remedy Entertainment), Mikko Uromo (ex-Remedy/Wargaming), and Milos Jerabek (ex-Wargaming), Redhill Games quickly positioned itself as a co-developer with strong ties to major publishers. The studio operates out of Finland and Cyprus, employing around 70 people.

Their most notable independent release was the free-to-play tactical shooter Nine to Five, but in recent years they shifted toward co-development, contributing to Overwatch 2 and supporting Supercell titles, among other unannounced projects.

🔄 The Restructuring Announcement

  • The studio confirmed via LinkedIn that restructuring will impact several talented colleagues, though exact numbers were not disclosed.
  • Redhill emphasized its commitment to supporting affected employees and encouraged industry partners to reach out for recruitment opportunities.
  • The company assured that it will continue to deliver remaining contracted work and ensure a smooth transition for teams supporting Supercell and other partners.

CEO Matias Myllyrinne expressed gratitude to the staff, highlighting their creativity, resilience, and spirit, and acknowledged both the highs and lows of building the studio over seven years.

🎮 Why This Matters

The restructuring reflects broader industry trends:

  • Economic pressures: Many mid-sized studios are facing challenges balancing original IP development with steady co-development contracts.
  • Talent redistribution: Layoffs often lead to skilled developers being absorbed by larger studios or startups, reshaping the talent landscape.
  • Strategic pivot: Redhill’s move suggests a stronger focus on co-development rather than pursuing risky standalone projects like Nine to Five.

This mirrors similar restructuring seen across the industry in 2024–2025, where studios increasingly rely on partnerships with giants like Blizzard and Supercell to maintain stability.

🌍 Impact on the Gaming Ecosystem

  • For developers: The announcement is bittersweet—while jobs are lost, opportunities open elsewhere, especially for studios seeking experienced talent in live-service and multiplayer design.
  • For players: Redhill’s restructuring likely won’t disrupt ongoing titles like Overwatch 2 or Supercell projects, but it signals fewer independent releases from the studio.
  • For the industry: It underscores the fragile balance between creative independence and financial sustainability in today’s gaming market.
