It is a ‘Finishing’ time for Mortal Kombat 1?

For Mortal Kombat fans, the journey through the brutal and cinematic world of Mortal Kombat 1 has been an exciting ride. However, NetherRealm Studios has officially confirmed that the Definitive Edition marks the end of new content support for the game. While balance patches and technical fixes will continue, players should not expect additional DLC characters or story expansions moving forward.

A Shorter Lifespan Than Expected

Mortal Kombat 1 launched with high expectations, introducing a fresh timeline and new character dynamics. Despite selling 5 million copies globally, it did not reach the commercial heights of its predecessor, Mortal Kombat 11, which surpassed 15 million units. The decision to end content support comes one year and eight months after the game’s release—significantly shorter than the two years and three months of support given to Mortal Kombat 11.

The last major content update for Mortal Kombat 1 arrived in March 2025, introducing the T-1000 as a guest character. Shortly after, NetherRealm released the Definitive Edition, bundling all previous DLC, including the Khaos Reigns expansion, Kombat Packs, and additional skins. This move signaled the end of active development, much like the studio’s approach to Mortal Kombat 11 in July 2021.

Fans have expressed mixed emotions about the announcement. Some feel disappointed, especially after Ed Boon’s assurances in September 2024 that NetherRealm remained committed to long-term support. The abrupt shift has led to debates within the community, with many revisiting Boon’s earlier statements and questioning the studio’s direction.

What’s Next for NetherRealm?

With Mortal Kombat 1 now considered content complete, NetherRealm Studios is shifting focus to its next project. While the studio has not officially revealed its next game, speculation is rampant. Many believe Injustice 3 could be in development, following NetherRealm’s alternating pattern between Mortal Kombat and Injustice titles. Warner Bros. Discovery has also reaffirmed its commitment to the Mortal Kombat franchise, ensuring that the brand remains a priority in gaming and entertainment.

The Legacy of Mortal Kombat 1

Despite its shorter-than-expected lifespan, Mortal Kombat 1 introduced 34 playable fighters and 21 Kameo Fighters, along with a revamped timeline that reimagined character relationships. While the competitive scene saw some struggles, including lower registration numbers at Evo 2024 and Evo 2025, the game still carved out a unique place in the franchise’s history.

As NetherRealm Studios moves forward, fans eagerly await news of the next big project. Whether it’s Injustice 3, a direct Mortal Kombat sequel, or an entirely new IP, the studio’s next move will undoubtedly shape the future of fighting games.

Mortal Kombat 1 future DLCs & Expansion are reportedly cancelled

In a surprising turn of events, Mortal Kombat 1’s future downloadable content (DLC) plans are reportedly in jeopardy following the poor reception of the recent expansion, Khaos Reigns.

According to a Reddit user known as FateUnknown, who has a track record of accurately revealing information about Mortal Kombat content, NetherRealm Studios has decided to cancel a third Kombat Pack and a second story expansion due to low sales of Khaos Reigns.

Released earlier this year, Khaos Reigns was priced at $49.99 and included new story content and the second Kombat Pack, featuring new characters. However, it received a “mostly negative” rating on Steam, with fans criticizing the lack of content for the price.

This comes along that these are not happy days at WB Games because they don’t have anything else to compare last year’s revenues performance outside Hogwarts Legacy, major launching and post-release content has not capitalized as expected.

Despite all this, the second Kombat Pack is still set to release the T-1000 from Terminator 2 and Conan the Barbarian, but no further DLC is planned beyond this.
