Nintendo, a company well-known for surprising its fans, once again leaves the community scratching their heads. This year, they released Donkey Kong Bananza, a phenomenal title and a strong contender for Game of the Year. However, just two months after launch, a downloadable content pack arrived and it has stirred quite a bit of controversy.
This $20 DLC adds only a new game mode and an additional world. At first, some players welcomed it with excitement, but it soon became evident that much of this content felt like it had originally belonged to the base game apparently cut out to be sold separately.
The new world, Kong Island, features nostalgic nods to different entries in the Donkey Kong series and lets players interact with several members of the Kong family. Unfortunately, the island feels hollow: there are no collectibles, no significant enemy encounters, and ultimately no real purpose.
The centerpiece of the DLC is the Emerald Rush mode, a roguelike experience where players lose all their powers and must complete timed runs to collect emeralds. Once the run is over, your abilities return but there are no tangible rewards other than the satisfaction of beating your own records. While the mode can be played across various maps, its added value fades quickly due to the lack of meaningful incentives.
In conclusion, Donkey Kong Bananza: DK Island & Emerald Rush feels like a forced attempt by Nintendo to reach into players’ pockets by selling content that clearly should have been part of the original game. Its overreliance on nostalgia and the inclusion of a repetitive, purposeless mode make this DLC one of the company’s weakest offerings in recent memory diminishing the strong impression left by the main release.
