Back in the 90s, id Software decided to expand the success of Doom by creating new games based on its engine and core mechanics. From that idea came Heretic and Hexen—titles that, despite their innovation, eventually faded into obscurity due to limited popularity and the technical restrictions of their time.
Now, in 2025, Nightdive Studios brings these classics back with a remastered collection that not only polishes the originals but also adds brand-new content. Visually, the games still look archaic with their pixelated style, but it’s impressive how well they’ve been adapted to 4K resolution without distortion. Every texture has been refined, some areas now feature new backdrops for improved atmosphere, and several animations were redesigned to give both titles a fluidity they previously lacked. Level design has also received updates, including details like barrels and windows, as well as expanded layouts that make combat more dynamic.
Gameplay retains the DNA of Doom: fast-paced first-person shooting. However, the medieval setting changes the tone significantly, swapping guns for crossbows, magical staves, and—in Hexen’s case—class-based combat with clerics and warriors engaging in melee battles. Exploration plays a role as well, with certain weapons and items hidden across different levels, helping players survive endless demon waves. The biggest gameplay tweak is the ability to swap weapons with a single button, while the new expansions introduce fresh enemies and exciting new weapons that blend seamlessly with the originals.
Story-wise, both games echo Doom’s formula: demons invade, and it’s up to the player to wipe them out across corridor-like levels. Still, Hexen sets itself apart by allowing players to revisit previous levels to unlock new areas, adding a layer of exploration that was rare for its era.
This collection includes the original games, their classic expansions, and brand-new content built with authentic 90s aesthetics, making it both a nostalgic trip and a refreshing revival. Unfortunately, it’s not flawless: the save system suffers from issues that can wipe progress, and the old-school gameplay may not appeal to modern audiences.
Heretic + Hexen is a fascinating trip back to the 90s, blending reverence for the classics with thoughtful updates. It may not be for everyone, but fans of old-school shooters will find a content-rich and well-crafted package here.
